To a greater degree and with greater impact, citizens of a municipality have the right to take the initiative to remove their mayor from office, a right that is further explained in article 72 of the LLSG.

Civic initiatives

The removal of the mayor by the citizens can only take effect if the request is signed by 20% of registered voters, and submitted to the chairperson of the municipal assembly. And then if the majority of registered voters vote for the removel of the mayor, the new mayoral elections are conducted in accordance with the Law on Elections.

However, there are other initiatives to propose and draft policies. Citizens may propose regulations for approval to the Chairperson of the Municipal Assembly if it is signed by 15% of registered voters in the municipality. The assembly should then consider these proposed initiatives within 60 days of their receipt.
